SSI Extended Range Sidemount is the natural next step after the Basic Sidemount course. You will learn how to use additional stage cylinders, manage larger gas volumes, and safely operate in a configuration of up to four cylinders. This is not a decompression diving course, but rather a program designed to develop the skills and procedures that form the foundation for further technical diving training.
Who is this course for
- Divers holding an SSI Recreational Sidemount certification or equivalent
- Open Water Divers interested in entering the XR Sidemount pathway directly (subject to consultation with the instructor)
- Decompression divers using a backmount configuration who wish to transition to sidemount
- Divers who want to learn how to use additional stage cylinders
- Divers planning further development in technical diving
- Divers looking to improve procedures, gas management, and dive organization
- Divers interested in more advanced sidemount configurations
What you will learn
- Extended Range Sidemount equipment configuration and fitting
- Proper setup, attachment, and handling of stage cylinders
- Management of a configuration involving up to four cylinders
- Advanced gas management techniques
- Improved buoyancy control, trim, and propulsion techniques
- Configuration and use of additional technical equipment such as a primary dive light, reel, and surface marker buoy (SMB)
- Procedures related to the use of additional cylinders during a dive
- Self-rescue skills and underwater problem-solving techniques
- Emergency procedures related to gas loss and equipment failures
- Planning and organization of more complex dives in a sidemount configuration
How we work
## How We Train
Training is conducted according to the Sidemount Precision Protocol methodology, built on precision, procedures, and the conscious development of diving skills. Special attention is given to proper equipment configuration, equipment placement, and overall system ergonomics, as every detail becomes increasingly important when diving with multiple cylinders.
New skills are first practiced on land before being transferred into the water. Throughout the course, we use video analysis to evaluate positioning, technique, and procedures in detail. This allows divers to receive precise feedback and continuously improve their skills through a structured and measurable training process.
Course schedule
The course begins with online academic sessions covering Extended Range Sidemount configuration, stage cylinder use, gas management, and safety procedures.
The practical portion is conducted over two intensive full training days, from morning until evening. The program includes equipment workshops, dry drills, skill development sessions, and four open water training dives.
